ETP Has Banner Year
The Employment Training Panel (ETP) continues to play a key role in supporting California employers' needs for a trained workforce to compete in the global economy. A year-end review reveals that ETP ends its 2007/08 program fiscal year with a record number of contracts approved and workers trained. The Panel approved 410 new contracts, totaling over $101 million, to train over 82,800 California workers, a 23 percent increase in the number of contracts approved over the 2006/07 fiscal year.
Almost 73 percent of all funding was for priority industries, such as manufacturing, high technology, biotechnology, multimedia entertainment, construction logistics, research & development and healthcare. Also, California's small business owners, operating with 100 or fewer employees, were awarded 162 direct contracts, totaling over $8.8 million to train approximately 5,000 employees, a 64 percent increase in such contracts approved over the previous fiscal year.
ETP also placed heavy emphasis on special initiatives and trends to address California's workforce challenges. The Panel funded projects in career technical education, green/clean technology, welfare to work, veterans, areas of high unemployment, and at-risk youth and ex-offenders, supporting a variety of critical workforce needs.
In recent years, ETP has been faced with reductions in funding and staffing. The economic challenges facing California will steer ETP's efforts on how to best utilize its finite funds and limited staff resources to meet the increasing demand for job training funding. ETP will continue to work with its partners to maximize available workforce development and training dollars.
