High Demand for Job Training Funds Exhausts ETP's 2008/09 Appropriation
Reflecting the ongoing growing awareness of the importance of workforce training, ETP is experiencing a growing demand for job training funds. Preliminary applications submitted to date this fiscal year have increased approximately 15% over last year's submittals at this same time.
Although the Panel approved 88 proposals totaling over $17 million at the March meeting, because of the early depletion of its 2008/09 appropriation, projects in excess of $100,000 were reduced by 50 percent with the caveat that contractors would have an opportunity to amend their contracts to restore the balance of their initial proposal when ETP receives its 2009/10 appropriation. Thus, the Panel approved approximately $10.2 million worth of job training contracts, which exhausted its current year program funds – the earliest ETP has had to cease job training funding since its inception in 1983.
"The increased demand for job training funds demonstrates the critical role ETP serves in uncertain economic times. Employers are reassessing their business plans in order to retrain employees and increase efficiencies to meet changing needs," said Brian McMahon, ETP's Executive Director." ETP will continue its statewide outreach to serve employers, incumbent workers, and displaced workers through this economic dip."
